Aboriginal Diabetes Initiative
As part of the Aboriginal Diabetes Initiative, Listuguj offers various programs and services to help support prevention, health promotion, screening and care management initiatives that are community-based and culturally appropriate. For example, in Listuguj there are initiatives such as healthy breakfasts, walking groups, workshops, and educational materials.
Aboriginal Head Start
The Head-Start initiative is designed to prepare young First Nations children for their school years. This program allows children the opportunity to gain and build a positive sense of themselves and encourages age appropriate activities in the area of curriculum development, culture and language, nutritional needs, parenting involvement, social support and health promotion. At the Listuguj Head-Start children meet friends, sing, play games, and learn Mi’gmaq.

In our effort towards building healthy communities, the LCHS administers the following services or initiatives: Snow Removal Contracts, Handicapped Ramps and Workshops & Seminars.
Community Based Projects
Community Health Planning Program
The objective of the Community Health planning is to administer a program that enhances the health and well being of First Nation’s People living in the community. We encourage both private and public establishments to respect the sanitary guidelines prescribed by the Federal Government and Health Canada.
Community Health Representatives
The Community Health Representatives work directly with community members at many events, initiatives and programs administered by the Listuguj Community Health Services Directorate. The program priorities are to improve health in the community. The Community Health Representatives keep the public updated through radio announcements and newsletters. As well, the representatives promote wellness and community volunteering.
Community Oral Health Program
Community Wellness
The goal of the Community Wellness program is to offer encouragement and support to clients dealing with an addiction; to organize events for the youth who wish to remain drug and alcohol free; and to promote a ‘healthy mind’ through the promotion of healthy living.
Crisis & Life Promotion
The Listuguj Crisis and Life Promotion program provides services to those individuals who are experiencing a crisis and are unable to cope and to provide community awareness of suicide prevention programs and eliminate the idea of suicide as an option.
Drug Strategy and Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Program
The Drug Strategy Program was initiated to support a healthy and well community. Through networking and efficient service delivery, services are provided to community members in the areas of prevention, promotion and training. The Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Program offers support, information, and referral services to community members about Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD).
Our partners in these programs include: Centre L’Escale, Listuguj Community Social Services (Families First and Youth and Family Center), Addiction Service (New Brunswick), and Gesgapegiag Health Services
Home & Community Care
Quality care is available for community members through the Listuguj Home and Community Care program. Health care is well administered, supportive and flexible to community members. The services aim to improve the overall general health of client’s served. Services include:
- Home visits
- Nursing services
- Case management
- Personal care
- In-home respite
- Meals on wheels
- Foot care service
Hospital/Health Liaison
The goal of the Hospital / Health Liaison Program is to make sure that all patients from Listuguj receive quality care while hospitalized, and toensure that all patients understand medical procedures as explained by the medical professional. We can assist clients with updating Medicare cards and completing NIHB reimbursement forms. As well, we provide in-home services, and can act as a liaison between clients and external service providers.
Maternal Child and Health Program
This program provides information and support to expectant moms and their family. As well, the goal for this program is to help families with infants and young children (0-6 years old) to enhance family wellness.
Medical Transportation Program
The Medical Transportation program will provide you with safe transportation and accommodation arrangements to the nearest qualified service provider.
Nursing
The goal of the Nursing Program is to deliver appropriate information to all community members, determine where knowledge gaps do exist and fill them. As well, nurses in this program provide youth with information to promote healthier lifestyles, increase active living and make healthier lifestyle choices. The Nursing Program offers an immunization program and has an annual flu clinic.
Water Monitoring Program
Our Water Monitoring Program helps to maintain the safety of Listuguj’s drinking water. Our main goal is to ensure that both private and public establishments respect the sanitary guidelines set by the federal government. Throughout the year, samples from four testing sites are completed weekly without any interruptions in the community. We test water for the following: chlorine, total coliform, e-coli, turbidity. By paying special attention to our drinking water, we will maintain this valuable and rich resource.
